Kids can play 1860s-era games at library
Children in grades first through sixth are invited to attend a party Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Indian Prairie Public Library that will re-create the fun and games enjoyed by young girls around the year 1864. Many of the activities are inspired by the popular book, "Meet Addy - An American Girl." There will also be crafts, prizes and refreshments at the two parties, one beginning at 10:30 a.m. for grades first to third, and the other at 1:30 p.m. for grades fourth to sixth. Read more...

Your guide to local holiday happenings
Burr Ridge The Willowbrook/Burr Ridge Chamber of Commerce will present "Home for the Holidays," a pancake breakfast with Santa and his elves, from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at Gower West School, 7650 S. Clarendon Hills Road, Willowbrook. There will be games, food, crafts, roving entertainers and pictures with Santa. The entry fee is $5 per person at the door. Read more...

Darien will light tree at Old Lace
The Darien Historical Society's annual Christmas tree-lighting ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Old Lace Schoolhouse & Museum at the corner of Cass Avenue and 75th Street. Carolers from Eisenhower Junior High School, under the direction of Carrie Vaccaro, will sing holiday songs from the museum steps. Free cookies and hot chocolate will be served inside, in the lower 1859 Room, and Santa Claus is expected to stop by to hear individual wish lists.

Italy is focus of library lecture
Darien resident and world traveler Carl DiNello will present a slide lecture called "Abruzzi," covering the life and customs of people in a small village in the mountains of central Italy, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, at the Indian Prairie Public Library, 401 Plainfield Road. Read more...

Tips for seniors to lower flu risks
The winter season can be a risky time for everyone, but for the elderly it can be deadly. Seniors are at increased risk of developing influenza, or the flu, during the colder months, which can lead to serious medical complications. The Illinois Council on Long Term Care, a statewide association of nursing home facilities, offers helpful advice to the elderly on how to avoid the dangers of this potentially fatal disease. Willowbrook police will join holiday seat belt campaign
The Willowbrook Police Department, in conjunction with law enforcement agencies across the country, and through a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation, will help keep residents safe by participating in the "Click It or Ticket" safety belt campaign over the Thanksgiving holiday period. The effort will run from Monday, Nov. 21 through Friday, Dec. 2. Read more...

Biggert, Bellock will host library program on freedom
"We, the People," a program for families with school-age children, will be held at the Indian Prairie Public Library at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20. U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert, R-13th District, of Willowbrook, and State Rep. Patricia Bellock, R-47th District, of Hinsdale -- along with World War II veterans Bill Schaefer, Bob Atkins and former Resistance fighter Ted Gadomski -- will talk about what freedom means to them. Major changes sought for DuPage voting
Possible switch to electronic voting not without detractors DuPage County voters could soon be seeing a major change in the way they cast their ballots. The DuPage County Election Commission is expected to soon recommend the county purchase a new, fully electronic voting system to meet federal and state requirements mandating increased voting access. Veterans Day ceremonies set
In recognition of Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 11, local communities are finding their own ways to honor local veterans and enlighten the public about the efforts they made to serve their country. The Darien Veterans of Foreign Wars will have a Veterans Day ceremony at 10:45 a.m. Nov. 11 at Memorial Park in Clarendon Hills. Driving course planned at libary
Motorists age 50 or older can take a refresher driving course at the Indian Prairie Public Library, which is sponsoring 55 Alive, a two-day program held from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 8 and 9.Read more...
