Darien's 'Miracle Man' receives top honor from mayor, aldermen
Jiskra's rehab peaked Feb. 25, when he climbed 1,632 stairs to the 94th floor of the John Hancock Center. Though he didn't exactly "hustle up the Hancock," as the annual stair-climb in the Michigan Avenue skyscraper is called, by finishing in one hour and 12 minutes, Jiskra said he finished last but happy."I had to stop every three or four floors," said Jiskra, 74. 'Chicken Little' to fly into Indian Prairie Library
"Chicken Little," a 2005 computer-animated movie about a chicken who thinks the sky is falling, will be shown at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30, at the Indian Prairie Public Library, 401 Plainfield Road, Darien.
Admission to this G-rated Disney feature movie is free to Indian Prairie Library cardholders, who can pick up passes now at the library's youth services desk. Admission is limited to Indian Prairie Library cardholders. Tickets may also be obtained on the day of the performance. Read more...

Far and away some good Irish flicks
It's almost St. Patrick's Day. Get ready for parades, bagpipes and lots of promotions from breweries. Being half-Irish, I'm all for celebrating, but these days I'm doing it in a more subdued way than the carrying on I did in my 20s. Having never been to Ireland, my only concept of what that country is like comes through movies -- most of them made by Hollywood studios. Read more...

ComEd 'on right track' in Darien, consultant says
The city of Darien's utility consultant, Ken Seaton, gave a thumbs-up to Commonwealth Edison March 6, saying the power giant "is on the right track" in making upgrades and improving service.In a report to the City Council, Seaton said ComEd has repaired a substation where a fire triggered a multiday outage last August, and has made numerous repairs to an overhead line that stretches for more than 8 miles through the city.
"On the whole, everything they've said they were going to do, they've done," Seaton said. "I have not seen anything in the field that showed they were not doing what they said they were going to do." Read more...

Kids invited to give claymation a try in BR
The Burr Ridge Park District invites children ages 8 to 14 to create a movie using claymation animation on Thursdays, April 6 to May 11, at the Community Center, 15W400 Harvester Drive. Sessions run from 4 to 5:30 p.m. as children will spend time using clay to build the characters in the story, a digital camera to take pictures and video editing software to make the pictures move and add sounds. Transplant clinic opens
Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation have opened a clinic in Oak Brook to better respond to the growing need for liver and kidney transplant management in the west and southwest suburbs of Chicago, hospital officials said.The clinic is now open at 2425 W. 22nd Street, Suite 203B, in the Oak Brook Medical and Surgical Center, where Northwestern Memorial physicians and nurses are available to see patients. District 61 targets budget cuts of at least $800,000
In preparation for its November referendum effort, Darien School District 61 will make cutbacks of at least $800,000 for the 2006-07 school year, Superintendent Warren "Chip" Johnson said at a Feb. 27 School Board meeting. Johnson said he would provide the board with a complete list of cutbacks in March. "The amount of cuts we make will be substantial," Johnson said. "I'm looking at $800,000 in cuts now, that I think we can live with." Read more...

Burr Ridge smoking ban dialogue heats up

Ide School kindergarten registration now open
Parents of youngsters in the Elizabeth Ide School attendance area who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 are asked to contact the Center Cass School District 66 office as soon as possible.
Ide School officials are asking residents to pass this information on to neighbors with school-age children who might not have other children in District 66. Contact the school office by calling (630) 783-5200 or e-mailing ccronin@ccsd66.org.

Tots taught computers
The Burr Ridge Park District will offer a computer class for children ages 3 to 5 to explore activities using a notebook computer and educational software on Thursdays, March 9 to April 6, at the Community Center, 15W400 Harvester Drive. Sessions run from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m., or 3:20 to 3:50 p.m., depending on enrollment. The fee for this class is $40 for residents and $45 for nonresidents. Read more...
