Vatican art lecture planned at library

Art historian Michelle Paluch-Mishur will present a slide lecture titled "Splendors of the Vatican" at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 30, at the Indian Prairie Public Library, 401 Plainfield Road, Darien.

Her presentation will cover a selection of works from the Vatican Museums, particularly those that are on tour as part of the exhibition "St. Peter and the Vatican: the Legacy of the Popes," which is currently on display at the Milwaukee Public Museum. Read more...

BR offers parkway trees

A few trees are still available for parkway planting in Burr Ridge after the spring planting program began April 14. Any Burr Ridge resident can request a tree for spring or fall planting. After it has been determined that the parkway or right of way in question meets the requirements for tree planting, that resident's name and address is placed on the village's planting list. Learn more about herbs at library

A slide lecture on "The Herb Patch" will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 27, at the Indian Prairie Public Library, 401 Plainfield Road, in Darien. Sandy Lentz, a master gardener since 1999, will educate both beginner and advanced gardeners on the selection, care and use of herbs. Lentz is one of a group of volunteers trained by the University of Illinois to provide gardening programs and horticultural activities to educate the public. Read more...

Kingswood plans open house event

Kingswood Academy, 1501 N. Frontage Road in Darien, will host an open house from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 26.

Kingswood is an independent, co-educational grade school in the Catholic tradition serving families with children in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Reservations are necessary. Turnout thin at county's first strategy session

There were more ideas than people at the first DuPage County strategic planning meeting April 12 in Downers Grove.

The hourlong session was the first of six the county is holding this month to find out what residents think are the most pressing issues facing the county now, and over the next decade.

"The purpose of the meetings is to come out and get information from you, the residents," said County Board member Tom Bennington Jr., R-3rd District, of Downers Grove. Read more...

Literacy group reaching out for new volunteers

Literacy Volunteers of DuPage is looking to add at least 25 people to its team by June, to assist the about 225,000 DuPage County adults who need help with reading, writing and speaking English. Read more...

Administrative professionals honored by WB/BR Chamber of Commerce

All area businesses are welcome to invite their administrative professional staff members to a celebration of Administrative Professional's Day with a celebratory luncheon program sponsored by the Willowbrook/Burr Ridge Chamber of Commerce and Industry starting at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, at Ashton Place, 341 75th St., Willowbrook.

Easter egg hunt set

All area children 8 years old and under are invited to participate in the annual Easter Egg Hunt from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 8, at Sunrise Assisted Living of Willowbrook, 6300 Clarendon Hills Road. Youngsters should bring their own baskets to collect the eggs.

There will be three egg hunts: 9 to 9:30 a.m. for 3- to 4-year-olds, 9:30 to 10 a.m. for 5- to 6-year-olds, and 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. for 7- to 8-year-olds. Each egg hunt will start promptly as scheduled.

Children will get a complimentary photo taken with the Easter Bunny. Doughnuts and juice will be served.

Free GED, career training offered

The Early School Leaver Program is a unique program offering free general equivalency degree preparation, workplace skill-building and specific career training for DuPage residents aged 17 to 21.

ESLP is currently accepting applications for the 2006 summer institute and fall semester. The Early School Leaver program is funded by the Workforce Development Division of DuPage County.

An informational meeting is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, in the Technology Center of DuPage building, 301 S. Swift Road, Addison. Students, parents and school personnel are welcome. Read more...

Raise a Reader @ your library

Indian Prairie Public Library offers classes designed for parents and caregivers of 4-5 year olds to learn fun and effective pre-reading techniques to "Raise a Reader". Classes are attended without children.

District 60 selects veteran as new superintendent

Maercker School District 60 has a new leader. School Board members have chosen Catherine Berning to be the district's new superintendent. She replaces Superintendent Joseph Matula, who will retire in June. A contract was issued to Berning at the School Board's March 21 meeting, when school officials announced their decision. The search for Matula's successor started last summer, and the field was narrowed to six candidates by January. Read more...

Dist. 180 wants in on merger talks

Small district is 'terribly interested' in consolidation Another school district in the Darien area wants to consider merging: Community Consolidated School District 180 in Burr Ridge.

"We would be terribly interested" in consolidating, said Jill Ann Coleman, president of the District 180 School Board, in a March 28 interview. Coleman said consolidation has been a recurring topic among board members and parents because the two-school district has only about 800 students and, like many districts throughout the state, is locked in a deficit-spending habit that is eating away at its financial reserves.
