Lecture to detail 1933 World's Fair
Art historian Jeff Mishur will present a slide lecture on the 1933 World's Fair, "A Century of Progress," at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, at the Indian Prairie Public Library, 401 Plainfield Road, Darien.Highlights of the program are many of the powerful images and symbols of the 1933 World's Fair including the trans-Atlantic crossing led by Italo Balbo, the Sky Ride, Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion Car and Sally Rand. DuPage County spreads 'moos' of annual fair
The DuPage County Fair has grown from its origin as a two-day event consisting of tent-covered exhibits and organized by seven men and women representing the DuPage County Farm Bureau, the 4-H program and the DuPage County Home Bureau.
The 52nd annual DuPage County Fair with the theme "We've got 'Moos' for you ... It's Fair Time!" will be a five-day extravaganza with big-name performers and carnival entertainment while sticking to its farm roots.
The fair will take place Wednesday through Sunday, July 26 to 30, at the DuPage County Fairgrounds, 2015 W. Manchester Road, Wheaton.

Bird outing set for youngsters
Mothers and More will host an open play group at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 25, at the Willowbrook Wildlife Center, where children of all ages will enjoy learning about their backyard pals. Willowbrook's entrance is on the east side of Park Boulevard, across from College of DuPage, in Glen Ellyn.Prospective members may attend up to three functions in a public place at their own cost before joining Mothers and More.

Brookfield Zoo passes now available at the Library
Indian Prairie Library is excited to be a part of Brookfield Zooç—´ Wild about Reading Library Pass Program for area libraries. IPPL cardholders can check out one pass per family for free admission for 4. Passes are good for one week. Fines for overdue passes will be $1/day. Check for pass availability.

Burr Ridge Veterans Memorial gets donation
The Kiwanis Club raised more than $3,000 at a golf outing to benefit the Burr Ridge Veterans Memorial. The club was scheduled to present a check to the Memorial Committee July 11, at the Memorial site at McCullough Park, corner of Plainfield and County Line Roads.The Memorial Committee is still in need of $200,000 to begin construction.
"We continue to need support to reach our goal and build this memorial in a timely manner," said Tim Vaclav, chairman of the Memorial committee.
Veterans wanted for the Indian Prairie Public Library Veterans History Project.

Banjoist to perform in Darien
Chicago musician Jim Gill will perform for the annual Music in the Park concert sponsored by the Friends of the Indian Prairie Library from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 14, at Darien Community Park, Plainfield and Clarendon Hills roads.Gill's recordings of banjo music and family-oriented songs have received Parents' Choice awards and have been honored by the American Library Association as Notable Children's Recordings. Literacy Volunteers of DuPage seeks volunteer tutors
Imagine not being able to read a food label, fill out a job application or help a child with homework.Over 225,000 residents of DuPage County who need assistance in learning to read, write and speak English face those situations on a daily basis. Literacy Volunteers of DuPage has helped meet their needs by providing one-to-one and small group tutoring with volunteer tutors. Read more...

Willowbrook fishing pier dedication set for July 8
The Willowbrook Parks and Recreation Department will dedicate the village's first fishing pier specifically designed for wheelchair-bound anglers during a ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 8, at Willow Pond, at the intersection of Plainfield Road and Adams Street. Read more...
