Nature workdays honor Sept. 11 victims
Join families around DuPage County at one of three special nature workdays to honor the memory of the victims of Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The Day of Volunteerism sessions will be from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 8, at Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Glen Ellyn; from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Grounds and Resources Complex at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville; and from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Herrick Lake Forest Preserve in Wheaton.
An adult must accompany children under age 14. Groups of five or more must make reservations one week prior to the event. Call (630) 933-7681 for waiver requirements.

DuPage County spreads 'moos' of annual fair
The DuPage County Fair has grown from its origin as a two-day event consisting of tent-covered exhibits and organized by seven men and women representing the DuPage County Farm Bureau, the 4-H program and the DuPage County Home Bureau.
The 52nd annual DuPage County Fair with the theme "We've got 'Moos' for you ... It's Fair Time!" will be a five-day extravaganza with big-name performers and carnival entertainment while sticking to its farm roots.
The fair will take place Wednesday through Sunday, July 26 to 30, at the DuPage County Fairgrounds, 2015 W. Manchester Road, Wheaton.

Literacy Volunteers of DuPage seeks volunteer tutors
Imagine not being able to read a food label, fill out a job application or help a child with homework.Over 225,000 residents of DuPage County who need assistance in learning to read, write and speak English face those situations on a daily basis. West Nile virus found here for 1st time in '06
Health officials offer tips to cut your risk A mosquito sample collected in DuPage County has been confirmed as the first positive test result in Illinois this year for West Nile virus, according to county health officials. The sample was collected May 22 in West Chicago. More than 250 human cases of West Nile disease, including 12 deaths, were reported last year in Illinois. Read more...

First Alert recalling smoke, CO detectors
Two First Alert, Inc., products are included in a voluntary recall by the company and the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission.The First Alert ONELINK battery-powered smoke detector, and a combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, have been recalled for an operational problem that prematurely drains battery power and causes the products to fail to detect smoke and/or carbon monoxide. These models were sold between June 2005 and March 2006 at various stores nationwide.
Consumers who are unsure whether their detector or alarm is included in the ban should visit www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml06/06151.html to check the descriptions and serial numbers of the recalled models.

Turnout thin at county's first strategy session
There were more ideas than people at the first DuPage County strategic planning meeting April 12 in Downers Grove.The hourlong session was the first of six the county is holding this month to find out what residents think are the most pressing issues facing the county now, and over the next decade.
"The purpose of the meetings is to come out and get information from you, the residents," said County Board member Tom Bennington Jr., R-3rd District, of Downers Grove. Read more...

Literacy group reaching out for new volunteers
Literacy Volunteers of DuPage is looking to add at least 25 people to its team by June, to assist the about 225,000 DuPage County adults who need help with reading, writing and speaking English. Read more...

Free GED, career training offered
The Early School Leaver Program is a unique program offering free general equivalency degree preparation, workplace skill-building and specific career training for DuPage residents aged 17 to 21.ESLP is currently accepting applications for the 2006 summer institute and fall semester. The Early School Leaver program is funded by the Workforce Development Division of DuPage County.
An informational meeting is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, in the Technology Center of DuPage building, 301 S. Swift Road, Addison. Students, parents and school personnel are welcome. Read more...

Spread cheer by helping needy
It's time for the Humanitarian Service Project's annual Christmas Offering, which has been providing needy families in DuPage County with an abundance of food and gifts since 1979.In 2004, the Christmas Offering served 93 families with 396 children and delivered 18 tons of food, the most ever. Each family received an average of 400 pounds of food, and each child received an average of five gifts. Besides new toys and games, all children receive new books. This year, new toys and gifts are needed for 1,400 children, especially toys for children ages 8 to 12. Read more...

Farm offers 'Spirit of Season' tours
The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County's Kline Creek Farm is offering "Spirit of the Season" house tours during December. Tours take place on the hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays through Mondays, from now through Saturday, Dec. 31. Holiday preparations take place throughout the house. Read more...

Major changes sought for DuPage voting
Possible switch to electronic voting not without detractors DuPage County voters could soon be seeing a major change in the way they cast their ballots.
