Internet safety program slated

A program on Internet safety awareness program, designed for parents who want to learn how to keep an Internet experience safe for their children, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, at Prairieview Elementary School, 699 Plainfield Road, Downers Grove.

Officials from the DuPage County sheriff's police and Center Cass School District 66 will provide information and safety tips on current Internet issues, including cyber-bullying, MySpace.com and online sexual predators.

Sponsored by Center Cass School District 66, the meeting is open to the public, but registration is required. To register, call Lakeview School at (630) 985-2700, Prairieview School at (630) 783-5100 or Elizabeth Ide School at (630) 783-5200.

Kingswood plans open house event

Kingswood Academy, 1501 N. Frontage Road in Darien, will host an open house from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 26.

Kingswood is an independent, co-educational grade school in the Catholic tradition serving families with children in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Reservations are necessary. District 60 selects veteran as new superintendent

Maercker School District 60 has a new leader. School Board members have chosen Catherine Berning to be the district's new superintendent. She replaces Superintendent Joseph Matula, who will retire in June. A contract was issued to Berning at the School Board's March 21 meeting, when school officials announced their decision. The search for Matula's successor started last summer, and the field was narrowed to six candidates by January. Read more...

Dist. 180 wants in on merger talks

Small district is 'terribly interested' in consolidation Another school district in the Darien area wants to consider merging: Community Consolidated School District 180 in Burr Ridge.

"We would be terribly interested" in consolidating, said Jill Ann Coleman, president of the District 180 School Board, in a March 28 interview. Coleman said consolidation has been a recurring topic among board members and parents because the two-school district has only about 800 students and, like many districts throughout the state, is locked in a deficit-spending habit that is eating away at its financial reserves. District 61 targets budget cuts of at least $800,000

In preparation for its November referendum effort, Darien School District 61 will make cutbacks of at least $800,000 for the 2006-07 school year, Superintendent Warren "Chip" Johnson said at a Feb. 27 School Board meeting. Johnson said he would provide the board with a complete list of cutbacks in March. "The amount of cuts we make will be substantial," Johnson said. "I'm looking at $800,000 in cuts now, that I think we can live with." Read more...

Ide School kindergarten registration now open

Parents of youngsters in the Elizabeth Ide School attendance area who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 are asked to contact the Center Cass School District 66 office as soon as possible.

Ide School officials are asking residents to pass this information on to neighbors with school-age children who might not have other children in District 66. Contact the school office by calling (630) 783-5200 or e-mailing ccronin@ccsd66.org.

Kindergarten sign-up scheduled at Concord

Kindergarten registration at Concord School, 1019 Concord Place, Darien, will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, in the school's learning center.

To enter kindergarten, a child must have reached his or her fifth birthday on or before Sept. 1. An original copy of the child's birth certificate must be brought to registration to verify the birth date, and three proofs of residency also are required.

Kindergarten teachers at the meeting will present a short program for parents and allow time for questions. To obtain an information packet, parents should call Concord School at (630) 968-3026.

Spaghetti dinner set

The Darien School District 61 Band Boosters' annual "all you can eat" spaghetti dinner will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at Eisenhower Junior High School, 1410 75th St. Friends of EJH, band families and the general public are invited to the afternoon of food and music, with entertainment provided by the Eisenhower Jazz Band, led by Maria Zurbano. The event will include a prize drawing to raise money for uniforms.

Tickets are $6 for adults, and $3 for Eisenhower alumni and children in grades one through eight. Children of kindergarten age and younger will be admitted free. For more information, call (630) 964-5200.

Maercker District 60 offers child screening

Maercker School District 60 will host early childhood screening for children ages 3 through 5 on Thursday, Feb. 9. The screening is intended to help parents learning more about their child in areas of speech, language, vision, hearing, learning and coordination.

Parents may register by calling Arlene, screening secretary for District 60, at (630) 968-0122.

District 60 serves parts of Westmont, Willowbrook, Darien, Clarendon Hills and Hinsdale.

Dist. 61 draws rejections to consolidation offer

Darien School District 61 Superintendent Warren "Chip" Johnson asked. The answers were: No, no and no. Johnson said Jan. 13 that he contacted superintendents of three area districts -- Cass School District 63, Center Cass School District 66 and Gower School District 62 -- "to see if there is any interest in consolidation."
